Sometimes I think back to that first class.
I remember walking into the room and feeling something unexpected — as though I had found my real home.
At the beginning, I understood my teachers’ words in a literal way. I couldn’t repeat the concepts very well, though. I think I worried too much and needed some verbal encouragement — reassurance that I was on the right path. I’m a visual and kinaesthetic learner, and lots of explanations didn’t always make sense to me.
I did my best to understand and apply what I was being taught, but it took time — and experience — to truly feel what those words meant in my body and heart.
And I’m still learning.
That, for me, is part of the allure of tango. It unfolds slowly. It reveals itself in layers.
It is such a beautiful dance. And such a respectful one.
A few things I often say when describing tango:
- It is a dance of patience.
- It takes what it takes.
- Learn to relax and first offer yourself trust, empathy, kindness, and love — only then can you truly share them with the person in your embrace.
Tango has a way of meeting you where you are… and gently asking you to grow.
Keep it simple. Keep it connected.
