Tango on The Bay is the Learning hub of Peninsula Tango: classes, workshops, practicas and private lessons happen here, while milongas, special events and our overseas tango trips are hosted by Peninsula Tango.

Tango on The Bay is about tango the way it was meant to be danced – grounded, connected, and built for the dance floor, not the stage. Argentine Tango began in Buenos Aires and has captured the heart of many and is now danced in many countries around the world. But it’s never stopped being a culture as much as a dance: music, story and connection all at once.

We build our teaching around the 5 Pillars of Tango – Posture, Connection, Trust, Musicality and Repertoire. It’s a biodynamics-first approach: how your body actually moves, balances and listens, before it ever tries to look like ‘tango.” Learning this way is slower at first, and well worth it – the embrace gets easier, the music starts to make sense, and the dance stops being steps and starts being a conversation.

We dance for ourselves and for our partners, always with awareness of the room around us. Tango asks you to find your own freedom on the floor while respecting everyone else’s – that’s the heart of what we teach.

Are to help you:

* Dance socially, with real floorcraft and awareness of the room

* Hear, understand and enjoy the music

* Move with balance, ease and technique – not tension

* Embrace, and be embraced, comfortably

* Improvise with confidence, rather than relying on memorised steps

We teach both roles with equal weight, right from the start. Classes stay relaxed and unhurried, because tango has a lot of nuances and everyone deserves the time to absorb it.

Lead and follow, in our classes, is a choice – not an assignment. Dance the role that feels like you or learn both.

Teachers who smile, and who genuinely love teaching

Exercises built around real technique, not choreography

Clear explanations – you’ll learn why, not just what

Group teaching and individual attention

Equal focus on leading and following

Your musicality and floorcraft will grow, class by class.

Meg Thomson — Founder of Peninsula Tango – Tango on The Bay

Meg has been immersed in the Melbourne tango community since 2008 — a passionate tanguera and dedicated event organiser who’s spent years experiencing tango scenes of every kind. Some welcoming, some not so much. That contrast stayed with her.

When she relocated from the vibrant inner-city scene to the picturesque Mornington Peninsula, Meg saw the chance to build something different: a tango community that was open to everyone, wherever they were starting from — with none of the cliques or judgement that can creep into dance communities. Just genuine warmth, encouragement, and the shared joy of the dance.

That vision became Peninsula Tango, founded in 2021 as a home for classes, milongas, special events, and overseas tango trips that take the community further afield.

At its heart is Tango on The Bay, the learning hub where it all begins — group classes, private lessons, workshops, and prácticas, held in an environment designed to feel supportive from your very first step. This is where dancers find their feet, build confidence, and become part of something — before stepping out into everything else Peninsula Tango has to offer.

“Tango on The Bay is more than just a tango studio; it’s where our community learns, grows, and falls in love with tango — before stepping out into everything Peninsula Tango has to offer, from milongas to overseas adventures.”
